Although a famous
historical trading port, Guangzhou isn't packed with the same shopping energy as
Hong Kong. However, the markets here are surely worth a visit and can
certainly provide visitors with an interesting experience. In addition,
Guangzhou has retained the reputation as an ideal place to buy tea, jade and
silk.
Liwan Plaza
Liwan Plaza is one of the biggest shopping complexes where the outlying streets
are full of stalls and markets selling cheapish clothes and household
items.
Guangzhou Department Store
Located on 295 Beijing Road, Guangzhou Department Store is a large
state-owned mall, mainly selling famous, excellent, new and special commodities.
Xindaxin Company
Xindaxin Company is one of the largest
state-owned department stores in Guangzhou. The 16-story building includes 15 shopping centers, selling food, articles
of everyday use, cosmetics, women and children's clothes, men's clothes, bedroom
articles...etc.
Nanfang Building
Nanfang Building is rated one of the ten best department stores in
China. It is a large state-owned retail sale enterprise with a time-honored
history. Nanfang
Building features "high grade, fashionable and low-price" commodities.
Shangxiajiu-Dishipu Pedestrian Shopping Street
This is one of the three major municipal-level shopping areas of Guangzhou.
The 800-meter-long Street is lined with nearly 250 shops and restaurants.
Beijing Road Pedestrian Shopping Street
This is the second pedestrian Street of this kind in Guangzhou. It is also an
ideal place for customers and tourists to do shopping at weekend and holidays.
NIGHT LIFE
Guangzhou has an up-and-coming night scene, though venues habitually open and
close without notice. The following is a list of bars and clubs which may
be worth checking out while you are in Guangzhou:
Cave: This bar is located in Huanshi Dong Lu, west from the Garden
Hotel. It's becoming increasingly popular and is hidden down in a
basement.
Elephant and Castle: This place has currently become a favourite
hang-out place for foreign residents, with big range of beers, inexpensive,
and nostalgic pub food such as canned tomato soup and toast.
Hard Rock Café: This world-known franchise has a late-night disco
with cover charge and beer, the music either DJ-driven or live.
Harley Disco Bar: Located across from the Provincial Museum, there
is no way you can miss the screaming eagle over the door of this bar which
provides primarily Western pop music.
Hill Bar: The Hill Bar is located across from the Garden Hotel.
It provides foreign beer, spirits and passable pub meals.
L'Africain: This is a popular dance venue and is raed as Guangzhou's
best place for a night's rave.
One Love Bar: Situated on the eastern end of Dongfeng Dong Lu, this
is a place for hardcore late-night partygoers.
Unplugged: Unplugged has variable live-music venue (and cinema)
founded by veteran Chinese rocker Wang Lei, who occasionally plays here.
A good place to follow a scene of Cantonese punk music.
